The World Giving Index (WGI) is an annual report published by the OneStage, using data gathered by Gallup and ranks countries in the world according to how charitable they are.

Currently in its ninth year, this year’s research has surveyed more than 150,000 people across 146 countries regarding the scope and nature of giving around the world.

The report bases its findings on three parameters: number of people donating money, volunteering time and helping a stranger

Key findings:

India currently ranks 124 in the world according to the World Giving Index.

Owing to large overall population, in absolute numbers, India continues to maintain the top position in two aspects; number of people volunteering to support any cause and people donating money to charity.

This goes on to show how “Giving” forms a part of India’s Samskriti (culture). Additionally, almost a third (31%) of people in India were reported helping a stranger in 2017, however this figure has fallen since 2017 which goes on to show that people’s generosity can never be taken for granted.
