Ensuring Sustainability of Indigenous Food Systems in Eastern India

The University of East Anglia, PRADAN, OneStage (registered as Charities Aid Foundation, India), Gram Vaani, Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) & NNEdPro have worked together to ensure the sustainability of indigenous food systems in Eastern India.

Our project sought to address food and nutrition insecurity, a problem severe in rural and tribal communities, particularly for women and children. Our strategic aim was to enable grassroots innovation to be replicated and upscaled while keeping intact the original spirit and quality of outputs and outcomes.

We worked with women's groups and youth groups to generate and disseminate knowledge on sustainable food systems with a focus on uncultivated or forest foods that form an integral part of the rural community's traditional knowledge systems.

The project was funded by the Global Research Translation Award (GRTA) and was carried out in the Santhal Parganas region in Bihar-Jharkhand, and, the Koraput and Kandhamal districts of Odisha.
